Airdrie at a Glance
The town of Airdrie is located approximately 13 km (9 mi) north of the Calgary
city limits on the Queen Elizabeth II highway, also known as highway 2. First
established as a railway town around the 1890s, the Airdrie of today is a booming
community, home to many young families who work in Calgary but live in Airdrie
because of the reduced living costs and small community atmosphere. And why not—Airdrie
has enough shopping and dining opportunities to rival the big city. Airdrie's
prime cultural attractions include the Nose
Creek Valley Museum, which showcases the life of early prairie residents,
and the Bert
Church Theatre, a contemporary performing arts venue that attracts musical
and theatrical performers. During the Christmas season, people from the Calgary
area often head to Airdrie for the renowned Festival
of Lights, a large illuminated display the depicts Christmas scenes and more.
